Debbi Michiko Florence: Hi. My name is Debbi Michiko Florence. Michiko is my middle name and it's Japanese. It's pronounced the way it's spelled, me-chi-KO. When I was born, my parents named me after the then-princess of Japan, the princess Michiko. She is now the empress.
When I was three, the prince and princess came to the United States for a visit from Japan to San Francisco, where I lived. My mom took me to where they were appearing. My mom pushed past the guards, greeted the princess, who greeted her back, and then my mom told the princess she'd named me after her. There's a photo of my bold mom and the smiling princess with the guards holding my mom back and me in her arms that was printed in the papers the next day. I have that photo framed in my house. I feel pretty lucky that I got to meet the princess I was named for.
