Gr 9 Up-Kanter's latest fulfills all the tropes of a traditional rom-com with some fun Gen-Z twists. Dumped by her girlfriend at the start of her dream fashion internship in New York City, Fitz uses the summer to stage an Instagram-worthy fake relationship with her estranged childhood best friend, all while on a social media hiatus from her perfect fashion influencer persona, "If the Shoe Fitz." Amid family drama, Fitz chooses to take refuge at her older sister's apartment rather than share a dorm with her ex. In an internship that challenges her in ways she didn't foresee, she begins to develop real feelings for Levi, the boy she once considered her best friend. While the novel follows the typical story arc of a teen romantic comedy, it does so with a lot of heart. Along with the romantic plot points, Kanter reveals a complex, human story of a young girl trying to figure out who she is to herself, her friends, and her family, even while she is expected to present a perfect image for her "followers." Fitz and Levi are Jewish. VERDICT This novel is perfect for young readers who are exploring their own identities, real or virtual, and for everyone who feels as if their unedited selves are a little too much.-Amy Shaw

Grades 9-12 Ava Fitzgerald, known to friends, family, and Instagram followers as Fitz, has arrived in New York City for the summer, where she's attending a workshop at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Meanwhile, her girlfriend, Dani, is nearby doing a theater internship. It all looks like it's a dream come true, starting with a golden-hour photoshoot at Washington Square Park. Except that not long after, Fitz is on the subway alone, crying. It's at that moment she's spotted by Levi Berkowitz, a childhood friend she hasn't seen in years. When Fitz learns that Levi and his girlfriend just broke up, she designs a plan complete with spreadsheets and a calendar to make their exes jealous. The deep roots of their friendship along with "plantscapades" across the city and carefully curated and documented dates make for a convincing fake relationship and a great distraction from real feelings of impostor syndrome and anxiety that are putting Fitz' fashion future at risk. A sweet romance that explores the cost of social media fame and the importance of prioritizing IRL relationships.

Ava "Fitz" Fitzgerald is in love with her perfect girl. Fitz has had a crush on Danica Martinez for forever, and over the past six months, she's tried to be the perfect girlfriend to her. Now, all Fitz has to do is tell Dani that she loves her. The location is perfect, the time is right, but when the moment comes, it's a monumental failure. Fitz is completely shocked by Dani's angry accusations, and she spirals into despair, which leads her to take a sudden hiatus from her popular Instagram fashion account, If the Shoe Fitz. A stressed-out Fitz subsequently bombs her first assignment at her prestigious summer program at the Fashion Institute of Technology, possibly ruining her future career prospects. She seeks solace from her sisters but, as the youngest, often feels left out. When Levi Berkowitz, Fitz's long-lost childhood best friend, recognizes her on the subway and then again at Pride in a coincidental re-meet-cute, Fitz hatches a fake-dating plan to make their exes jealous and in the process help him win back his girlfriend and reunite with Dani. This tangled romance filled with convenient plot points follows Fitz as she navigates various relationships in her life. While her egocentric personality is at times difficult to empathize with, her earnest growth into a more self-aware and compassionate person is ultimately fun to follow. Levi and Fitz are Jewish, bisexual, and white. An entertaining queer New York love story. (Romance. 14-18)
