A droll, not-quite-fractured but surely sideways original tale of two sheep, Baabwaa and Wooliam, who go in search of adventure and encounter a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Baabwaa and Wooliam are innocents up to a point, but Wooliam is a reader and based on stories he knows exactly what the wolf really is. When he tells the wolf as much, the wolf is intrigued and wants to learn more. Wooliam shows him a book, but it turns out the wolf can’t read. And so a strange, entertaining friendship begins: Wooliam teaches the wolf to read, Baabwaa knits him a new coat, because, as she notes, his current one is a disgrace, and the wolf, being a wolf, just can’t help himself every so often and chases them around. A tongue-in-cheek premise told with straight-faced humor is paired with blithe watercolor illustrations that embrace both the silliness and warmth of the story, which includes the pleasure the wolf finds in reading. (Ages 4-8)

Baabwaa and Wooliam are two sedate sheep who enjoy knitting and reading. "Sounds kind of boring," writes Elliott (The Two Tims). "But they like it." Their attempt to inject adventure into their lives gets off to a slow start ("Is this what adventures are like?" asks Baabwaa. "All this walking, I mean") but picks up when they are confronted by a wolf who is (poorly) disguised as a sheep. A frantic chase ensues, it's revealed that the wolf can't read, and an unlikely friendship is born: Wooliam teaches the wolf to read, and Baabwaa knits him a new woolly coat, as his current one is a "disgrace." Elliott's droll sense of humor generates lots of laughsâ€""It says here I'm cruel and sneaky!" complains the wolf after learning how to read. "And your point?" responds Wooliamâ€"which Sweet (Some Writer!) capitalizes on in mixed-media scenes that embody the simultaneous dopiness and intrepidness of the sheep, as well as the wolf's mix of menace and vulnerability. An off-kilter adventure with charm to spare. Ages 4â€"8. Author's agent: Kelly Sonnack, Andrea Brown Literary. Illustrator's agent: Rebecca Sherman, Writers House.
From AudioFile Magazine
Narrator Eevin Hartsough's cheery, youthful tones enhance the humor and warmth in Elliott's story. Moreover, her precise phrasing and relaxed pace work to evoke the imagery of Melissa Sweet's illustrations. Baabwaa and Wooliam are two sheep who make friends with a wolf, teaching him to read and helping him curb his bad-boy image--as it's depicted in tales like "The Three Little Pigs" and "Little Red Riding Hood." This brief but enjoyable listen works well on its own or as a companion to the picture book. It's a good match for families and children who like unexpected endings and funny, cozy narratives.
