In recognition of Rock Your Mocs Day, which began in 2011 and takes place each year on November 15, a cast of Indigenous kids dons their traditional footwear for the day. There’s Alyssa, a member of the Colville Nation, whose moccasins “shimmer and shine” with beads. Maria (Osage) dances in her mocs, Riley (Little Shell Chippewa) skateboards in his, and Tristen (Seminole) plays a carefree game of tag. Moccasins are works of art that can be made of deer, elk, moose, or seal; they are gifted to babies and custom-fit to older kids; they come in different colors, designs, and styles. Perhaps most importantly, “moccasins connect us to our past,” promote pride, and are a traditional skill passed from generation to generation. Simple, upbeat language makes for a joyful celebration shared by visually diverse kids from various tribal nations. (Ages 3-7)
