Opening with an understated and frequently reiterated, “She’s nice, my mom” (n.p.), Anthony Browne continues his series of companion books about the members of an unseen child’s family— My Dad (2001) and My Brother (reviewed here). Mom is wrapped in flowers and hearts, but she’s also tough when the going gets rough. The author Browne has produced great similes, “tough as a rhino” (n.p.), but the artist Browne provides the humor: the rhino sports a lovely bow on its tusk that matches mom’s housecoat.
