Book Description
for The Environmental Movement by Laurence Pringle
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
The “world-renowned” entomologist Edward O. Wilson is quoted in this fine volume as saying, “Environmentalists have been looked on as the dreamers of the world, when in fact they are the realists.” From its roots prior to the 20th century through what the author calls “many shades of green” at this point in time, Pringle summarizes what has happened so far and who made it happen. He points out various approaches to grassroots activism and formal governmental legislation, and enumerates how what was once “conservation” has expanded to become a global issue. Pringle concludes with the challenge that the “environmental movement will need every bit of its strength and help from every person who calls himself or herself an environmentalist as it faces the challenges of the new century --the century of the environment.” Listings of 26 selected environmental groups /agencies and four government agencies; a 49-item bibliography of new sources as well as classic works, most of which were written for adults; and an index increase the already great worth of a valuable overview and call to action.
