Book Descriptions
for Salsa Stories by Lulu Delacre
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Carmen Teresa’s extended family has gathered to celebrate the New Year. As they share food and good feelings, Carmen’s relatives also share stories about their lives before they came to the United States. Carmen’s family members come from Argentina, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Peru. In each chapter, a different family member tells a story about a time when he or she was young. Each story mentions a distinctive food dish from the individual’s homeland. Carmen Teresa collects the recipes for each of the foods, and those are included as part of this flavorful collection. Lulu Delacre has turned a contrived premise into a fresh and appealing volume. (Ages 9-12)
