Book Description
for It's Corn Picking Time! by Jill Esbaum and Melissa Crowton
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
This cheerful ode to corn-harvest time loosely modeled on the pattern of “The House That Jack Built” features a farmer who loves her work. “This is the farmer, / her cap, / and her gloves.” The brown-skinned farmer begins her day as the sun rises; the big, red combine harvester, awoken from its slumber, needs some loving care before it is ready to be driven to the field. Then, it’s time. A bird’s-eye view shows the combine making careful sweeps across the land. “This is the corn head that clatters and knocks / as chains grab and gobble the autumn-dry stalks.” The narrative includes just enough fascinating detail: As the corn is shucked, the machine spits the chaff out the back; once the grain tank is full of kernels, the auger and spout are positioned over the grain wagon, “and corn whooshes out!” Transported to the dryer, the kernels twirl upward into the bin, where they produce “billows of steamy, roast-corn-scented cloud.” The day ends where it began—the kitchen—but now the farmer is surrounded by family members enjoying a meal. The informative, lively text is accompanied by collage-style illustrations in autumn hues.
