Book Description
for Earthrise by Leonard S. Marcus
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A picture is worth a thousand words—or in this case, 147 pages. Short, accessible chapters detail the Apollo 8 mission on which astronaut Bill Anders took the iconic photo known as “Earthrise”—the earth rising above the moon—which had a notable cultural impact, especially on the environmental movement. A summary of the space race and the U.S.’s commitment to reaching the moon provide context for the Apollo 8 mission. Descriptions of the astronauts’ time in space, including their first glimpse of the Earth—they were deeply moved and then scrambled to capture it on film—are captivating. Chapters detail the photo’s entry into our cultural image bank and the fact that many people no longer realize its source. While none are as arresting as the titular color photograph, ample black-and-white photos supplement the informational narrative.
