Book Description
for Every Monday Mabel by Jashar Awan
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“Monday is the best day of the week (according to Mabel, at least.)” Her Monday morning routine includes dragging a chair out of her bedroom, through the house, and out the front door. Each of her family members has their own perspective on Mabel’s Monday activity. Her older sister thinks it’s “the most boring thing,” her mom “the cutest thing,” and her dad “the funniest thing.” Mabel situates her chair at the top of the driveway, the “perfect spot to sit and wait.” Soon, her patience pays off; there’s a rumbling and the blare of a horn. “It’s here! The best thing in the world is finally here! THE GARBAGE TRUCK IS HERE!” With the truck’s arrival, the pages’ backdrop becomes a vibrant yellow. Onomatopoeia peppers the pages. Exclamation points and capital letters abound. “IT GRABS THE TRASH CAN! AND LIFTS IT INTO THE AIR!” Once the truck has done its job, Mabel “sighs contentedly,” unable to believe that her family is so lackadaisical about such a magnificent sight. As she heads inside, the perspective shifts to follow the truck further into the neighborhood, where plenty of other fans are perched eagerly at their windows in anticipation. This book’s outstanding pacing, design, and tone are sure to delight truck lovers (and maybe even the truck-indifferent) alike. (Ages 2-5)
